The brief for this project was to update a small galley kitchen for a busy family. The kitchen served a family of 3 and was situated in a semi-detached Victorian house in West London. The clients wanted the area to be as practical and functional as possible, whilst incorporating some interesting design elements. They also wanted to create a feeling of space.
The family wanted to keep the kitchen fairly ‘fuss free’ in design and so the white semi-gloss cupboard doors worked well to achieve this aim. The colour and finish of the doors also meant that they reflected a lot of light in the room, which was ideal considering it’s compact footprint. Handleless cupboard doors also meant that the kitchen appeared streamlined, which helped to create a sense of space as there was little visual clutter.
Although small, we managed to have lots of useful kitchen storage in the form of cupboards and a good sized fridge-freezer. Careful space planning also meant that the kitchen housed the family’s washing machine and tumble dryer. It just goes to show what can be achieved in a small space!
The final design touch was to have a statement floor installed. We used Italian floor tiles in a geometric design for this. The tiling works well to catch the eye and draw it along the length of the kitchen, which in turn helps to create a feeling of space.
