When Mr P and I were first married, we lived in a one bed flat in West London and had only a small balcony as far as ‘outside space’ was concerned. Growing up in Kent, I missed the fields and countryside close to my childhood home. I tried to cultivate our own little green space by planting flowers in lots of pots and window boxes. Fast forward to almost 14 years later and ‘Bringing the Outside In’ is a trend which can help you deliver a touch of nature to your living space while also bringing calm and serenity into your busy life.

An essential home trend, also known as “Biophilic design,” (adding plants and flowers to your home), allows people who do not have a garden or balcony, to inject some greenery into their lives – even if space is restricted.
Talking about Biophilic design, designer Oliver Heath said: “Biophilic design is more than just bringing the outside in, it’s about making and strengthening a connection with many aspects of nature. It’s about natural light, views on nature, plants, natural materials, textures, and patterns.”
But what does this look like in practice in your home? Well, first of all, start by using natural materials for covering walls, floors, and ceilings. Using natural colours, such as greens and browns alongside organic textures and shapes can feel like you’re injecting nature into your home. Using branches or even tree trunks, logs and pine cones can be an easy (and free!) way to do this.
Introducing greenery into your interior space is one of the easiest and best ways to create an outside-inside theme. Plants also have many benefits as not only do they create a beautiful visual effect, they also help to create a calming ambiance. Live plants help clean toxins from the air and produce oxygen and humidity helping to ensure your interior environment is healthy, comfortable and relaxing.

You might need to consider the maintenance of live interior plants because it’s important that they are lush, healthy and full of life. Live plants are great but don’t forget that there are some amazing artificial plants on the market now if you are concerned about your ability to keep them alive! You could also send for some free artificial grass samples which you can use in different parts of your home.
Get creative and see what you can come up with. Don’t forget to let me know in the comments below if you try this trend at home.
