How to update a gallery wall

Gallery walls have been a popular way to display photographs or pictures for a few years now. I know I’ve certainly used them in the past myself! The interior stylist in me is often on the hunt for new ideas to use in the home though and so updating the ‘gallery wall’ idea is something that’s interested me for a while.

When we moved into our current home three years ago, we went to Kempton antique market (surprise, surprise), in order to find a few new pieces for our home. We came home with a gorgeous two seater chair, which you can see below, and also a coat hook styled as an old fashioned school ruler. Being a child of the 80s, I remember using 30cm wooden rulers at primary school and so the find was a rather nostalgic one for me. I wanted to make a feature out of the coat hooks instead of just hanging coats on them, so decided to use some ribbon to hang some family photographs from each of the hooks.

Hanging photos

As you can see, we have three photographs which are mounted in very cheap and cheerful IKEA frames! So with that and the cost of some ribbon, this is a very simple and easy way to update a gallery wall.

The only thing I would change about the way I have the photographs displayed at the moment is that I’d like to get some thicker ribbon to hang the photos from, so that it looks more luxurious. I might also have a mix of coloured ribbon in the future to create some other visual interest.

The two seater chair sits just underneath our ruler and we use it as a place to take our shoes on and off as we don’t have a hallway. One of the joys of living in a small Victorian property. Lots of character but not lots of space! The rug is actually meant for outdoors and is a plastic one. It’s very easy to clean and so means that we can put muddy shoes on it and it doesn’t matter. I highly recommend them. We bought ours from Green Decore.

What do you think? Have you seen any updates on the gallery wall idea? I’d be interested to know so do leave a comment below.
